So I’m thinking about being a total idiot and attempting to buy a 2005 Volvo S80 2.5T. That’s the five cylinder with the 5speed auto. It only has 64,000 miles. What should I look for?

DO....NOT....BUY.....THAT....AT....ALL.......COSTS.
The transmissions were extremely shitty and that caused major problems. All Volvos are not reliable, I repeat all Volvos are not reliable. Technically it was a Ford transmission I think, but still DO NOT BUY THAT.

so it’s a “quality” car then?

The bad transmissions came from Opel and affected the early 2000s cars. This one should be fine.

might not be a bad choice...
the early 2000s had really bad transmissions. IDK if it was fixxed by then.

A different car? :P
I’m only half kidding. I used to sell a lot of early 2000s Volvos and they were an odd combo of Audi-like reliability (usually minor, but expensive, repairs) but with very plebian materials, dynamics, and feel.
I believe this one was platform mates with the Ford 500/Taurus, right? It just didn’t have any real premium feel to it. This is all IMHO, of course.
I’m a Volvo fan, but not so much of this era (S60/70 excepted)

Had a friend with the 2.9l S80. Oil changes were scary, but it was comfortable and surprisingly reliable considering his...unorthodox maintenance schedule.

Oil filter canisters are literally the worst

05 should be late enough for the change. I don’t think those were “as” bad

It doesn’t look too bad but all those little buy here pay here lots kinda scare me

It was the T6's with a 4T65 that were the issue.

Volvos, like anything else, can be as reliable as the owner wants them to be. Irv Gordon has 3 million miles on his. The 1990 760 Turbo wagon I recently sold served me well for almost 8 years. If you know what to avoid, you’ll be in for fewer problems later on.

I ended up buying it. It’s at a large Kia dealership - I wouldn’t go to the buyhere/payhere ones either

Yeah, its really, really nice, feels very solid, and quick. The weird looking aftermarket stereo you see in the picture actually pops up and out into navigation, pretty cool lol.

I just got my 08 C30 T5 and dad has his 2012 S60 T5
The turbo power is so fun and they are still some of the best seats ever! Yours is really low mileage which is nice.
